NYSC, Ogun Camp

Hello everyone, this is Paul Anderson reporting from Ogun state!! Yes, I underwent my three weeks NYSC orientation course at Shagamu, Ogun state. It was my first time visiting the State too. I picked up my call-up letter from the NYSC secretariat in Lagos and started preparing for camp almost immediately, as I had a week to get my stuff together. The annoying thing about preparing for the camp is that you'll hear different stories about what to bring and so on. I actually made 16 photocopies of my certificate, transcript and call-up letter but at the end of the day I only used two photocopies of each document. But, aye, it's better to be safe than sorry ... so make as many copies as you deem necessary.

Rate your NYSC, Ogun Camp experience!

Arrival - After getting everything I needed, my next destination was the Orientation Camp at Shagamu. The moment I reached the camp I was amazed at the solid structures and security check point; my mouth literally opened for about 2 minutes. However, I was quickly interrupted by the traders at the gate of the camp, who were selling products including id card holders, buckets, tipex, pens, permanent markers etc. FYI: a permanent marker is an essential commodity here because you'll need to put your name on all your belongings (like boarding school).

Hostel - Locating the male hostel wasn't difficult as I simply followed other male corpers. After some time on a long queue, I was assigned to my room. The moment I got into the room, my high spirit was just dampened by the rundown state. The room was small, dusty and filled with spiders having a field day while spinning their webs.

Programme Kick-Off - After locating my bed, I dropped my box off and went to the multipurpose hall, where I was assigned to a platoon (after my documents were cross-checked), and received my NYSC kit. All corp members are put in groups and each group is known as a platoon. There were 10 platoons in total at the Shagamu location.

Routine - We woke up at 5am every day, then proceeded to the parade grounds for morning devotion. Afterwards, we'd head to the stadium for lectures. The lectures usually lasted for four hours; very long and very very boring. From time to time, we'd have motivational speakers as well, but mostly "skill acquisition" programmes e.g. ICT, fishing, carpentry etc. After the afternoon lectures we'd head back to our hostels for a brief period of time before the evening parade at 5pm. Then, dinner was served and the mammy market booming! At this point, couples had time to interact with themselves. Most corpers usually went to the mammy market after the day's activities to chill with friends and catch up on unconcluded gist.10pm was lights out, and then the same routine repeated itself.

Soldiers - The military officials in Ogun State camp were very friendly, especially compared to soldiers in other camps (from the stories I've heard). The last days of camp were actually quite interesting. The soldiers were more relaxed with the corpers since most of them had already lost their voices from screaming. I argued with one of the soldiers before leaving camp and GOD knows I was ready to stand my ground no matter what. When the zombie realised this, he simply told me to leave. While interacting with some of the soldiers you could see they were passionate about our country, but they all complained about our leaders. It was painful to see soldiers who had served their fatherland for the past 16 years but didn't have anything to show for it.

Toilets - The toilets at this camp weren't the best. Shot-putting seemed to be the preferred option for most people. For those of you who don't know, shot-putting is the act of defecating in a disposable nylon (component 1) and flinging it faraway into the bush (component 2). Very gross! The girls were very good at component 1, but struggled with 2. It was a nightmare for any platoon to be told to clean up the female hostel and its surroundings because disposable nylons containing faeces awaited you.

Camp Fire - While coming to camp I was told the interesting part of camp was the camp fire night. Basically, each platoon comes together to make the night successful. Unfortunately, our camp fire night was very boring. Each member in my platoon contributed 400 naira, but not everyone who contributed was able to eat. Moral of the story? Ensure your camp fire night is fun!

Shenanigans - What I noticed in camp was the fact that you could easily spot students who studied abroad and in the private Nigerian universities, from the way they behaved. I mean, I studied abroad too, (in Ghana, lol), but there was just something about the way the foreign trained and private uni students acted; almost like they were supreme or something. We actually had a foreign-trained student who called her mum to complain about being maltreated by the soldiers. Her mum came the next day and picked her poor child up. A guy who also studied abroad fought with a soldier. God knows if not for my timely intervention the soldier would have been beaten the heck out of the poor boy. My point? There will always be shenanigans at camp so brace yourself!

Overall, the orientation camp was a nice experience. I encourage everyone to attend it if you can stand the heat and shenanigans.

I recently paid for and bought curlformers from this online retailer. Dafunshop.com specifically says the product
·         Comes in Long & Wide, Long & Narrow, Short and wide, and Short and narrow.
·         Starter Pack contains eight Curlformers: four clockwise and four anti-clockwise.

However, two packs contained seven curlfomers and one contained just four.  They delivered to me a total of 18 curlformers and three rods instead of 24 curlformers and three rods (since I bought three starter packs).

The website is simply misleading.  If I was told that the contents of each pack varied in number, I would not be so upset.  If you want to buy something from them, be doubly sure (triply if possibly)!

Heavy is the mastermind behind Rain Vedutti Photography. He's an engineering graduate who's passionate about photography and is fun to be around. Heavy covered my brother's event and I've seen a couple of pictures from his model book, so believe me when I say he really knows what he's doing.

Heavy covers all sorts of occasions/events including weddings (which he typically charges between 200k-500k), photo documentaries, birthday parties e.t.c. For photo sessions with models, he charges 15k/hour, and every subsequent hour is 5k. Seems a tad pricey, however prices are negotiable. Plus, he really delivers quality work/pictures and is very professional. He also does his photo books abroad so the quality is very high.

Although based in Abuja, Heavy is mobile and will travel to different locations for his clients.

Overall, I really liked the service/pictures Heavy provided during my brothers event. He has a good personality and is very professional and friendly (for example, based off our interactions, I can tell you that his best friends includes his camera, laptop, iPod, guitar and speakers...lol). He truly knows his stuff and I'd recommend him to anyone seeking photography services.

At this point I think I've said enough. I'll allow his work do the rest of the talking (click here)

It was a special friend’s birthday and I was frantically looking for a spot to take him to dinner in Lagos. I wanted a romantic feel with an elegant setting, and relaxing ambiance. After bouncing several ideas, I remembered that I’d always said I wanted to check out The Avenue Suites, so I decided to check out their website. After spying the different restaurants and menus online, my mind was made up!

Food: When we got there, the waitress brought out groundnuts, popcorn and bread while we perused the menu. I didn't get around to eating the nuts and popcorn, but the bread was AWESOME! I wish they served it with honey though. We ordered chicken spring rolls, and I’m almost certain they’re the best ones I've ever eaten. The chicken was soooo soft and melted in my mouth… yum! Unfortunately, by the time my food came, I was full on bread and chicken spring rolls, but I picked a little bit at my dish (White Fish Brochettes with Sauteed Vegetables and Fries). The fish was really soft – almost too soft, actually. And we ordered ice cream to cap it off, but ended up packing it to-go, since we were really full. The ice cream was pretty good though. I’d definitely give them a 2-thumbs up and I’m coming back!

Ambiance/Décor: It was excellent! The lighting was just right – not too bright, not too dark. There’s a smoking and non-smoking section, so you get to choose where you’d rather sit. I wish we’d gotten there in time to get a window table, just so we had a view. Regardless, Uptown is definitely a place to go for a romantic night out.

Service: The wait staff was great. They were all very courteous and accommodating.

Overall Value: The good thing about Uptown is that their menu is online, so you can see how much you’re going to spend beforehand (be sure to add the extra 5% VAT, and 10% service charge). It was more pricey than I’d usually go with, but this was a special occasion so I didn't mind shelling out the extra money. Our bill came up to N15k.

Yem-Yem is a huge supermarket located at the college of medicine, university of Lagos. The store also has a branch at the main University campus in Akoka, Lagos, and offers a variety of items including toiletries, weaves, groceries, alcohol, etc. Basically, their target audience consists mostly of college students, but you can pretty much get almost anything you need.

The store is divided into various parts for easy accessibility; cosmetics and toiletries; foods and frozen foods; alcohol and confectionery; drinks and ice cream (see below for pictures)

I particularly enjoy shopping at Yem-Yem because:
·        It’s very affordable and the sales attendants are fast, fun & friendly (just like Target in the States)!
·        The cashiers  are straight to the point and don’t waste time at the registers/gist with each other instead of attending to customers
·        They offer different options for payment; cash, cards, etc.

To top it all off, I’ve never experienced a failed POS transaction! There’s also ample parking available and good security, as the store is located in the new plaza facility.

I was introduced to Breakfast in Bed by my sister one Sunday morning during the Christmas break, when our house girl was away and everyone was too tired to cook. Breakfast in Bed is a breakfast delivery service that delivers to Lekki, Ikoyi and Victoria Island. They have various menu options including the Continental, the American- which consisted of eggs and waffles, and the Nigerian- which consisted of yam and eggs, to name a few. My mom and I got the Nigerian, while my sister got the American. The food comes in foil plates and costs around 2k5. Sandwiches cost around 1k/1k5.

I ordered via phone and the person who answered was extremely courteous and friendly. Once he found out I was calling for the first time, he took the time to find out how I had heard about the service and thank me for my business. I also found a choice included in my sister's order and he called me back to clarify. Nigerian customer service is mostly hit or miss, but I really appreciated the service.

The food came in about 30 minutes, pretty good in my opinion and was pretty tasty. I particularly liked the eggs. My biggest complaint is that we were supposed to get free juice with the order and only one cup of juice was brought for 3 orders. I'm not sure if that was a mistake or not, in any case, it made no sense to me.

I would order from breakfast in bed again on a day when I'm not feeling up to cooking breakfast. It was fast, easy and cheap. See below for pics...

I was very excited when Coldstone Creamery came to Nigeria. I’d bemoaned the less-than-stellar quality of ice cream here, so when I heard they’d opened in Lagos, I was thrilled! I’d been to the locations on Saka Tinubu in VI, and on Admiralty in Lekki a couple of times last year. After a couple of months, I heard that the flavor options had dwindled drastically. This year, another branch was opened at The Palms Mall, and I hoped they would have a better selection of flavors  However, just like the first two branches, this one has mostly chocolate only! I love chocolate ice cream, without a doubt, but it’s becoming an embarrassment to the Coldstone Creamery brand, when someone can’t order 95% of the listed menu items, because there’s only one flavor available.

Only chocolate ice-cream...
I asked for a waffle bowl, which I discovered was stale afterwards and had to throw most of it away. In addition, the almond topping I wanted wasn't  crushed. It’s hard to eat whole almonds in ice cream. One of the wait staff tried her best to crush them by hand, so her effort was much appreciated.

*SMH*

I’ll end by saying that the quality of Coldstone Creamery in Nigeria has slipped a lot, since they first came. They need to do something about getting their flavors in ASAP! I’d rather have NO ice cream, than a substandard Coldstone Creamery.

This review is based on my experience at the Cakes and Cream Surulere branch.

What's a good birthday without cake... doesn't exist, right? My sentiments exactly! So I decided to play the role of "cake bringer" for one of my friends' birthday, and checked out the Cakes and Cream location in Surulere. Let me just say, their cakes are HEAVENLY! Since that visit, I've definitely gone there more than I hoped - #byebyeteamkeepfit, #helloteamcake. But every bite of their cake is so worth it!

I had tried to get my friend's birthday cake from other stores but everywhere else needed advance notice. Cakes and Cream, on the other hand, had "standby cakes" that were pretty much ready to go upon message customization. I selected a cake and paid about #3500 (their standby cakes cost between 3k5-5k). The sales attendant was very courteous and quick to attend to me.

Cakes and Cream also sells large slices of cake for about #500. All the flavors I've tried are soooo yummy. My favorite remains the black-forest cake... #nomnom. They also do wedding and ceremonial cakes too, but those have to be booked in advance. During one of my visits, I saw a wedding cake that had been booked...*Sigh*-  It looked so beautiful. Online booking and delivery services are also available. Although my friends speak very highly of the Cakes and Cream delivery service, I'm yet to try this out for myself. However, I must say that their current website needs an upgrade...

Cakes and Cream is very affordable. The sales attendants are really nice and try as much as possible to attend to the unending crowd. I didn't even think Nigerians ate that much cake! The parking lot is quite small, and the interior of the store is pretty plain - except for the cakes on display, there really isn't anything else.

The Cakes and Cream madness is still on. Like some people will say, your birthday is not complete without a cake from Cakes and Cream. But being that my friends and I are Cakes and Cream lovers, I doubt we'll need a birthday celebration as an excuse to splurge a little...

Susan Tee is a new store located directly opposite Berger Retail market. I needed to quickly grab some provisions as I was running late to school, so I checked out this "Supermarket". What a big mistake!

First of all, this is supposed to be a proper supermarket, like a Shoprite or Park 'n Shop on a smaller scale. Although there's parking for only 3 cars, the outside of the building structure looks big. Upon going into the store, I quickly realised how tiny and stuffy it is. There's no space at all, neither is there air-conditioning. I could barely move or breathe properly. To make matters worse, there were so many staff taking up more of the already tiny space and watching me like a hawk. As in, I couldn't get out of their sight. It was so bad, I couldn't even take pictures! I almost suggested the owner get CCTV instead of having her staff follow people around like that; complete waste of resources if you ask me.

The store has two levels and is decently stocked in my opinion ( I was able to get everything I needed for school). The ground floor is for groceries, while the 1st for household items including centre pieces, flower arrangements, seasonal gifts, etc. Apart from the excessive number of underutilised staff, the sales attendant who checked me out was overly friendly. Not necessarily in a bad way, but I can see how that'll annoy someone else. Their products are actually very cheap; definitely cheaper than many stores I've visited, so that's one plus that might make me come back. However, if I have to get provisions for school and have ample time I doubt this store will make my top 10 (or even 50) list of places to shop.

Review provided by Miss Fine Dining

Bottles is a Mexican Bar and Grill with a sports bar feel that offers TexMex  dishes. The restaurant is located in a hidden close off Olosa Street in Victoria Island. There is lots of street parking available in the evenings, however, I wouldn't recommend parking far away and walking down in heels as the road isn't tarred.

Food: Bottles has an extensive menu with all the major Mexican Dishes so there's a variety of appetizers and mains to pick from. We had a sizable portion of wings to start off and all ordered individual plates for mains. I had the Muchos Grande burger which cost #2800 and comes with chips and salad. For the name, the burger was quite small but it was a very good cut of tender fresh meat. My sisters got the spicy tequila prawns accompanied with garlic butter sauce & plated on a beautiful bed of pineapples (cost #4000 & was quite small), and  a portion of chicken and beef fajitas (#3700). Overall, food  portions at Bottles are slightly smaller given that TexMex portions are usually huge.

Drinks: Bottles is known for their Frozen Margaritas and boy are they amazing! I would say only Sailors in Lekki has topped this one. We got a pitcher of Strawberry Margaritas for #6500 and it served each of us 3 rounds in the cocktail glass cup pictured below.

Glass of Strawberry Margarita

Ambiance/Décor: I am a sucker for fine dining and not really a pub girl but Bottles works for a fun night out with a large group of friends/family. Bottles has more of a pub feel with large indoor and outdoor wooden bench sitting areas, huge TVs tuned to sports stations, and loud crowds of people drinking and chanting. There's also a live band to entertain the crowd on some nights. Like with most places in Nigeria, smoking is permitted indoors and it can be a bit overbearing for those who can’t stand cigarette stenches. We opted to seat outside as I always do in places that offer this option, however, sitting outside Bottles on a really crowded night isn't a good idea as it can get rowdy.

Service: I’ll say the service was an 8/10 because our waiter was extremely friendly, quick with taking our orders and totally sensitive to our needs. We even got 2 complementary servings of Nachos with guacamole and salsa. In addition, the food came out just in time; not too quick that it might have been frozen and just warmed in the microwave, and not too slow to chew on nachos crumbs.

Overall Value: We found Bottles very affordable especially their drinks which cost between 1k5-2k5/glass and 6k5/pitcher. Appetizers cost between 1k8-2k5 and mains 2k8-6k. The only thing we found disappointing was the breakdown of the bill. We basically got the sum total of the food and drinks, a 10% service charge, and to our surprise, an additional 10% ‘consumption tax’ which we are still trying to understand.

All in all, it was a very good night out that cost each of us just over 7k. I'd say the most value for money was definitely the pitcher of Strawberry Margaritas. I would definitely be coming back here with a bunch of friends for cocktails!

You know how all of your friends visit a particular place and talk about it all the time, but you haven't had the time to try the place out, so you have NOOOOO idea what they are on about? And then, that uncomfortable feeling like you have aged and aren't keeping up with the rest of the world creeps in. That's exactly how I felt prior to my first visit to Old Country. Everybody on campus was talking about this bakery and I felt so stale, I just had to visit. It definitely wasn't my last visit as I've been back on numerous occasions.

Old Country is a bread lover's dream come true (and a diet killer on the flip-side). It's like a bread house serving all kinds of bread; sardine bread, student loaf, family loaf , and even chocolate bread (I have to try that one). The bakery is located in a really small building structure with a cosy inner setting and ample parking. The inside space is fully air conditioned, however, it gets hot at times due to the heat from all the baking (definitely something they need to figure out). I find Old Country to be more of a pick up and go/chill outside kind of place, especially as there really isn't much seating available inside.

Old Country also serves burgers and hot dogs that taste SO good and are very filling and affordable at #300. Some other "menu offerings" include popcorn and tasty soft serve ice-cream (one of my favs). My ultimate favourite, though, has to be the Fairy Cake, which I've nicknamed the special Fairy Cake. My oh my! It's so fluffy; I could eat a dozen. The best part is it cost just #50!

Old Country's prices are very student friendly and affordable. Their staff is quite remarkable; very friendly and always smiling (especially the lady at the counter). The bakery also offers breakfast, delivery and catering services for various occasions including weddings and birthdays.

Old Country is definitely worth the hype. Now, it's your turn to visit and share your Old Country experience!

I found out about ShoMya at the recent WED Expo in Lagos. I happened to walk by their booth, and noticed ‘Eyebrow Threading’ as one of the salon’s services. I quickly got their information and made a mental note to visit their salon.

The salon’s location is on Admiralty Way, and shares the same building as Collectibles. It was a little tricky to find, but there were signs directing you to which part of the building ShoMya is. ShoMya is located in one of the back rooms, overlooking the Lekki Lagoon. It’s quite cozy and set up nicely.

Unfortunately, when I got there, the owner (Elaine) wasn’t available and she’s the only person who does the threading. I was told to come back a few hours later, which I did – she was just about to complete a make-up session with another client (who turned out BEAUTIFUL, I might add). Elaine was very courteous, as well as her staff, and made me feel comfortable while I waited. When my turn came, she was thorough and interactive, ensuring that I was happy with the job done. Cost #2000.

I am definitely going back to ShoMya and will keep a standing appointment to get my eyebrows threaded there.

Their services are similarly priced to other salons in the Lekki area and include hair, make up, manicure/pedicure, gele tying – in home, at the salon or location of your choice.

“We welcome you to the wonderful world of Potatoes. Eat healthy, nutritious and instant delicious potato meals with varieties at reasonable prices delivered to your doorstep within Lagos.” – Potato Lagos

I found out about Potato Lagos through a friend on twitter and I think it’s a wonderful idea, especially as a new way to target 9-5ers in Lagos. However, I was under the impression that it’ll be like potato heaven, you know - showcasing the many possibilities of food options derived from potatoes, but I don’t think that’s how Potato Lagos works.

I’ve directly and indirectly had 3 experiences with Potato Lagos. The first time I called by 9am to order breakfast, and they only had Irish potatoes with shredded chicken & green peppers. I was disappointed, because, again, I imagined their menu to be an extensive showing of potato capabilities, only to be offered the sole option of boiled potatoes with shredded chicken or gizzard. Refusing to be discouraged, I ordered two plates and was promised a delivery time of within 2 hours. 3 hours later, and my meal hadn’t arrived. I called again and was informed that the delivery guy was trying to locate my office. Who takes one hour to locate Lagos Law School? And what stopped the guy from calling me? 20 minutes later, he was still locating o! I finally saw him strolling towards my building. Angry and hungry, I paid for my meal without a word and walked back inside. I opened my meal and the smell of green peppers immediately overpowered my nostrils. The green peppers were way too much! Also, I didn’t see a reasonable amount of onions and the food wasn’t spicy at all. My colleague, A, tweeted all the insults she knew at them, but we got one of my other colleagues, B, to try the food and she liked it.

My Potato Lagos order
My second Potato Lagos experience occurred when colleague B decided to order the same meal for lunch. Having witnessed my experience first-hand, she placed an order by 9am too, but didn’t get her “lunch” until 3pm! I couldn't help but laugh hard. They even gave her 2 extra food packs with pineapple juice, and forgot to collect the payment. She must have really enjoyed the food, as she ordered the same meal the following day. This time, her food came on time with free pineapple juice.

Per my direct experience, I honestly wouldn’t recommend this place especially if you are hungry and want on-time delivery. However, the pricing is quite good. A plate cost 500 Naira and delivery is free in VI, Ikoyi, Lekki, Lagos Island and Ikeja.

“Frozen Yogurt Shop, Sweet Kiwi, sells premium non-fat, low calorie, healthy frozen yogurt in over 40 flavours! Healthy never tasted better!” – Sweet Kiwi

Review provided by Meme A

While at L'Espace, a multi-brand concept store in Lagos, my friends and I noticed the Sweet Kiwi stand. My initial thought was they offered only kiwi-flavoured stuff, but I was quickly corrected upon getting closer.

We were greeted by Ehime, who we later found out is the CEO. We got chatting a little and she explained how she was in the US for training and all, and informed us on the discounts that were being offered. I was a bit hesitant at first because it was my first time trying frozen yogurt in Nigeria; however, I braced myself and bought a big cup with my fuel money. Although I had to go back to the ATM to pull out cash, the FroYo was well worth it. I was literally WOWED. And the service we received was up to par. See FroYo price listing (as of March 2013) below:

6oz cup ---- NGN 750/cup

8oz cup ---- NGN 950/cup

12oz cup ---- NGN 1500/up

Waffle Bowl ---- NGN 1100/cup

Waffle Cone ---- NGN 900/cone

Since my first encounter, I’ve been to Sweet Kiwi on numerous occasions and tried more than 3 different flavours. I mean, FroYo is healthy food, right? And we should strive to eat healthy…lol.  On a more serious note though, my best flavour is the Winter Watermelon. It is amazingly awesome! Sweet Kiwi also offers sweet, dry and healthy fruit toppings (non-fruit toppings also available). Healthy + Delicious + Fun treats = Guiltless Pleasures!

Toppings
Winter Watermelon with M&M's & Chocolate Chips

There’s also a Sweet Kiwi stand at the Palms Mall (on the genesis deluxe cinema floor), and the company caters events + offers delivery.

Being that consistency is one of the biggest issues faced by food outlets in Nigeria, I really hope Sweet Kiwi maintains the high standard they’ve started out with.

PS: “Sweet Kiwi frozen yogurt contains healthy active cultures which aid digestion and boost the immune system. It is rich in natural calcium and vitamin C, and also contributes to colon health, decreases the risk of yeast infections and lowers cholesterol.” #teamhealthyliving J

I'm not really into online shopping, but I’ve got a friend who knows ALL the online stores in Lagos and patronizes them from time to time. She introduced me to taafoo.com.

At first glance, I wasn't so impressed with the website, considering the fact that at that time, they didn't have a mobile compatible version. I managed to go through their items and stuck around because they were having some crazy sales. Prices of items were drastically slashed (e.g. items that cost 20k could go for 4k5). Quite encouraging for my student pocket.

Anyway, my friend bought this beautiful gown for 2k (originally priced at 6k), a brooch, and some bangles. She received a confirmation e-mail informing her that the order had been placed and will be delivered within 5 business days. The message also contained information on payment options. To our greatest surprise, her package arrived the next day (#nokidding). Talk about exceeding expectations! The dress was beautiful, and looked much better on my friend than on the website. The brooch was lovely, but the bangles though, mmmm. Let me just say those were definitely “embellished” on the site.

Overall Taafoo offers a wide range of items, however I don’t find their website to be fully functional. Based on my experience, their delivery is on point (i.e. on time) and their items are quite affordable. I'm looking forward to the next sale period to get a dress for myself. ;)

The Risk Of Using SMS For Customer Service

The article you are about to read was originally published on forbes.com and is definitely a good read. It was written by Jabez LeBret, who has authored three books on technology and marketing and  delivered more than 950 training presentations globally. He is currently the Chief innovation officer at GNGF, a digital marketing agency.

“There are three things you can bring to bed with you at night: your dog, your spouse, and your phone. The mobile phone has become our latest appendage, an extension of who we are. The siren call of the text message is alluring and immediate. According to comScore, SMS is used regularly by 75% of all Americans.

Where things can go wrong: Following two phone calls and a quick visit to an AT&T store, my phone buzzed with the notification of an SMS survey. After answering all of the survey’s questions, I responded to the final, open-ended question with one request: “I’m having difficulty syncing my information to my new phone – can someone call me?”. Unfortunately, this text fell on deaf ears because an automated computer program was asking all the questions. AT&T does monitor these communications, and a manager will eventually contact the customer.

When a company chooses to engage in customer service via SMS, an appropriate communication strategy must be in place. If done properly, SMS campaigns can build a strong relationship with your customer base. There are, however, some rules to follow when texting your customers. The risk of disregarding these rules is customers getting frustrated with your service or disengaging themselves from your brand.

Always ask for permission. Not even your phone company should be texting you without asking for permission. Even if your customers request to receive SMS for monthly deals, do not assume you can text them with information about new store openings. An AT&T spokesperson said, “These surveys are about the customer experience and are not a form of solicitation or marketing, therefore a customer opt-in isn’t required.” This statement, indicative of the approach that some large companies are taking toward these customer service situations, is technically true but completely misses the nature of SMS communication.

Texting is a personal, two-way conversation. SMS is not an online survey, social media post, or RSS feed. Every communication medium, including voice, Twitter, Facebook FB -0.74% and texting, has its own set of human behaviors. These behaviors dictate how we expect to use these communication tools. We use SMS to avoid calling or emailing, often because we are looking for a quick answer. When you interact with your customer by SMS, be ready to interact in the moment.

Provide an easy opt-out. Make it simple and obvious for a person to stop receiving SMS communication from your company. Even if customers requested that you text them, regularly ask them if they would like to continue receiving these messages. This goes against conventional marketing funnel strategies. SMS is not an email campaign; it is direct communication to a device we sleep with every night.

Give the keys back to the customer and let them decide how they want to interact with your brand. There is an inherent responsibility that comes with having multiple media to reach customers: communicating to the customer in the way the customer expects.”

I'm not new to Debonairs Pizza. In fact, I confess to patronizing their business more frequently than I really should (#teamkeepfitinthebuilding) lol. On the real though, I visit Debonairs often and they sell really good pizza at bearable prices. I hadn’t tried their delivery service until this fateful day. Let me gist y’all about my “wonderful” experience.

First of all, it was so difficult trying to find the delivery number associated with this branch. I had to literally search everywhereon the internet for it. If not for the intense Pizza craving I was experiencing, I’d have just given up at this point. Oya now, I found the number and called to ask for pizza options. As you can probably tell by now, nothing was going to get in my way of having freshly made Pizza delivered to my dorm. I was very determined!

The lady who answered the phone seemed displeased, almost like I was disturbing her. To make matters worse, her background was extremely noisy. Shebi she should have stepped out after all my “ehhs” and “pardons”? I guess she didn’t get the message. So I requested she go to a more quiet area to take my order.

Time to order and pay, so they could deliver my pizza sharp sharp. She informed me that they only had two options - chicken and meat. After probing a little further, I ordered the chicken pizza with no onions. As a proud #teamkeepfitmember, I requested for the small (cost 2k5) but was quickly informed that they don’t deliver small pizzas so I opted for the large (cost #3250).

Excited that my pizza was on the way, I proceeded to give my location details. Can you imagine that this woman had the nerve to scream, “ahh Yaba, that is far!”. I didn’t even know how to react, especially considering that Yaba isn’t that far from Surulere. Anyway, my good heart ignored her comment and asked for my pizzas estimated time of arrival. 1 HOUR!!! I jejely said thank you and waited for my pizza to be delivered.

Exactly 1 hour later, the delivery guy called me downstairs from my dorm. Part of me expected the pizza to be cold, but it was actually hot and tasted good. I found the large to be a bit small though, but paid for it anyway.

Considering all I went through to get this pizza, I probably wouldn’t opt for Debonairs delivery to Yaba unless two conditions are met; 1) I have an intense pizza craving and 2) Extra owo to blow.  Plus, I don't think I really got my money’s worth.

PS – If someone out there is thinking to start a pizzeria in Yaba and offer really good tasting & prompt delivery, I will HIGHLY patronize your business (buying small pizzas one day at a time). :)
