Sunny is an extremely talented shoe maker who is known (around Festac Town) for repairing and making durable & quality shoes, sandals and slippers. No matter the condition of the shoe once you bring it to him, he puts it in order nicely. Plus, I can testify that his sandals stand the test of time! Sunny also makes female shoes.

What distinguishes Sunny from every other shoe maker is his high quality customer service. Though he cannot hear or speak, he is friendly, funny and has a very positive attitude. If you want to buy from him you will have to use your hands to demonstrate or write down what you want. Once he gives you a price he doesn’t change it.

If you are ever in the Festac area I recommend you stop by his shop. If you have any footwear that is in a bad condition and you don’t want to throw it away, just bring it to him and he will sort you out well.

continue for my review

My experience: Swift is the internet provider we use in my house. The network is somewhat fast. Most times I'm able to watch youtube videos and series online. Today, the network connection got cut off and we were trying to pay via the Swift website but it wasn't working. My dad then complained that he has never been able to pay his Swift bill online, but he keeps trying and that the process is "very frustrating" because it hooks at the last minute (after entering one's personal info, card details, etc.). So I went online to chat with a Swift representative about the problem. Below is a screenshot of the chat.

I was actually impressed! I thought the representative was polite and understanding. Also, I had never heard of Quickteller but it worked! By the way, Quickteller is a service that allows one to pay, send or receive money from any location. Although you need a Verve or Nigerian Mastercard, you can pay almost any bill (mtn, dstv, phcn, etisalat, glo, starcomms, etc.) without having to go to the bank using Quickteller. All you have to do is create a Quickteller account (and this process took me less than 2 minutes).

Anyway, the chat with the Swift representative has given me some hope concerning the future of customer service in Nigeria. I hope the service is the same when one visits their different locations...

Sincerely,
R.N

This review is based on my experience at GTbank Ogba branch. As I stepped into the branch with my mum, I was expecting the worst customer service ever but of course it was not as straight forward as that. I followed my mum upstairs straight into someone’s office (not the manager). They answered quickly and nicely, little did I know it was all just to please my mum (as some of her business’ accounts are handled in that branch).

As my mum went to the car thinking I shouldn't take too long, I proceeded to deal with my own personal issue, which was to collect my MasterCard I ordered since April (it's now August by the way). I was immediately demoted downstairs and told to fill out quite a number of forms - very frustrating as there were way too many redundant forms required. After filling out all the forms, I was told my mum was still a signatory to my account. You can imagine the confusion on my face as I thought we had changed that information 3 years ago! Luckily, my mum was still in the car so I asked her to come back in to change it. Once she was in, the customer service changed incredibly for the better. The reps were now smiling and attempting to get us sorted with some sense of urgency. I was finally handed the card and told to go to the counter for some guy to print my pin. I did that, got the pin and had to leave in a hurry. Oh was I glad as I thought I was done with these people. So wrong!

I first tried the card at some cashpoint close to my house. Let me just say I’m not a technology genius but I’m good at reading instructions. I did what the machine asked me to do but the card still didn’t work. A few days later I went back to the same branch, this time without my mum. I was told that I had to go back to the cashpoint and get the exact error message written on the screen of the machine. I went outside, queued up for about 10 mins to use the cashpoint, got the message and went back to the same guy, who now told me it was the password that was the issue and I should order another one and will take 3 working days. I also asked for my internet banking to be activated, and had to fill quite a few forms as well for that one. At this point I was quite upset and the convo with the gtb rep went something like this:

Me: I live very far away (about an hour with Lagos traffic) and can't afford the luxury of commuting here, spending long hours and getting nothing accomplished.

Gtb rep: *blank stare*

He really looked at me like I was crazy!! No jokes.

3 business days later, I got to the bank very early to avoid long queues. Got the pin sorted and the card was working. Also got the internet banking bit fixed quite quickly and I was told it will be activated before the end of the day. Thank God I thought to myself. Back to the UK tried using the card and the same problem of password occurred. I’m also still waiting for the email to activate my online banking that was supposed to be active by the end of the day (I left Nigeria over a month ago). I then decided to call their customer service. Oh Lord, that is another story entirely. Anyways, the card isn’t working at the moment.

Gtbank's customer service was ok but far from being good enough. The number of forms you have to fill to get a simple task carried out is ridiculous, considering there is nothing like recycling. Also, I do not understand why my problem could not be resolved at any branch and I had to keep going back to the Ogba branch.

Overall, I've heard this is one of the best banks in Nigeria but I'd advice you be prepared to deal with all sorts of shenanigans.

My friends and I wanted to meet up for a quick lunch – and they mentioned a café spot in Victoria Island, Bistro 7, not too far from Mega Plaza.

Food: I have most definitely found a new favorite spot in Lagos! This is my ideal kinda place for a nice, relaxing meal. We ordered our drinks – lattes and a frappuccino. My latte was bleh, but my friend’s frappuccino was wonderful – it’s what I’d order next time. For lunch, my friends ordered club sandwiches while I ordered a Grilled Chicken Pesto sandwich that was divinely yum! I’d never tried pesto before then, and I’m now a convert. The sandwiches came with fries (Yay) and coleslaw (Boo). I’d like to come back and try the dessert menu – there’s a chocolate cookie/ice cream dessert, and some crepes I’m really interested in trying out :)

Wonderful frappuccino

Grilled Chicken Pesto Sandwich
Ambiance/Décor: First things first, I love the fact that the café/restaurant is in a secluded, gated compound. When you drive in, you notice a little dining set-up in the garden for those willing to brave the Nigerian heat. The café/restaurant itself is beautifully decorated. The café separated from the restaurant by glass windows reminds me of Starbucks. The restaurant has a cozy, light, airy feel. Note that we went in the afternoon, so it was quiet. I’d like to check it out at night and see if it’s more bustling during that period. Tip: check out the Ladies/Gentlemen restrooms – sooo pretty (I ventured into the Ladies only o). I especially liked the restroom signs, which I felt weird taking pictures of.

Café/Restaurant Demacation

Service: Here’s where I had an issue. While our waiter and others around were courteous and respectful, our waiter didn’t pay a lot of attention to us, and to top it off, whispered in my friend’s ear for us to leave a separate tip for him and slide under the table mat! While my friend intended on tipping the waiter, his asking for it was a big No-No and left a bitter taste in our mouths.

Overall Value: The café items (cupcakes, pastries, coffee drinks) were a tad pricier than I’m used to. Our sandwiches cost about N2500 each. The entrees on the restaurant menu were about N3500+.

Ocean Basket is a South African seafood-theme chain restaurant. They recently opened a branch in Victoria Island, and on a day where I craved seafood and my friend craved sushi, this was the recommended place to try out.

Food: Note – do not place orders when you are hungry, otherwise you will order too much food. We decided to split the Seafood Platter for Two, as well as one of the Sushi Platters for Two. Needless to say, by the time we were done with the Seafood Platter, we were soooo full, we had to box up the sushi. I really enjoyed the fries, fish, calamari and squid heads part of the platter. I don’t like mussels, so I didn’t eat it, but my friend liked it. You have to make sure they give you the Sweet Chili sauce, which I think should replace Ketchup as a mainstay condiment. The manager was nice enough to give us the bottle of Sweet Chili sauce! My 2 sources of contention would be that we had to wait 30+ minutes for the food to arrive (our waitress let us know beforehand); but when the food came, it wasn’t hot. I don’t particularly like hot food, but cold fried seafood just isn’t appealing. Also, the bread was boring.

Boring bread

Sushi Platter

Ambiance/Décor: LOVE! I would visit over and over, if only for the décor. It’s similar to a Joe’s Crab Shack (US). There are two floors, and you can sit on the balcony as well. If you wanted to have a semi-private room, there’s a sectioned off space with a few tables. I particularly liked the table mats and wall instructions on how to eat sushi and other stuff – FUN ATMOSPHERE to say the least. And it’s great that there’s parking inside! You hardly get that in Lagos.

Service: The wait staff was friendly and courteous. However, we had to look for our waitress more than twice because she’d disappeared. It would have been better if she was more attentive.

Overall Value: Dishes start at about N2000 and go up to N12000 for family platters. The sushi ranges from N1100 to N5000. Given that we were full after the Seafood Platter for 2, which cost a little over N6000 I would say that we got what we paid for. It’s just a tad pricey.

Mmmm. Oh how I was looking forward to C-stone in Naij! I had heard my aunt’s friend talk about going to the V.I. branch and not being able to get anything but chocolate ice cream. She had come all the way from Ikeja to get some for her kids. She explained how the waitress had laughed at her like she was joking when she asked if they’d be getting/making more flavors. Anyway, that was 5 days ago. Today, I went to the Lekki branch with a friend. How excited we were for some cake batter ice cream with mix-ins.

We were first welcomed by the harsh smell of burnt waffles. There was quite a queue for the ice cream but we decided to check to see what flavors were available before getting in-line. Being that it was mostly chocolate, it wasn’t difficult to tell what was available; however, there were no labels for the other flavors (lemon and coconut sorbets by the way). You can imagine the disappointment. My friend and I ended up speaking to a staff who explained that they were missing some ingredients to make the remaining flavors and were waiting for their container to clear immigration.

All out! Except for more chocolate

Overall it’s a pretty chill spot with Dominos (downstairs) and Coldstone sharing the same building. Considering that it’s an ice-cream parlor I think there’s ample seating for small and large groups. BEWARE of parking though - there’s space for only 8 cars. You’ll have to park in front of someone’s house on that street or on the other side of the road and cross over. In terms of pricing, like it, love it, gotta have it are 700, 1000, and 1300 respectively, with each topping costing 100 naira.

I’ve had shawarma from 01 before and it was ok. I got the mixed single shawarma with chicken, beef and 1sausage link for #750. Anyway, I had promised my cousin shawarma yesterday because I had a big bite of hers. I ordered 3 shawarmas at 2pm. I live 2 minutes drive away and like 5 minutes walk from this location so I decided to try their delivery service. By 2:30pm I still hadn’t heard anything from 01 so I called and was told that the deliveryman was on his way. By 3pm I was already furious and was about to call to cancel the order. Around 3:08pm dude calls and says he’s outside. I’m explaining to him that we are no longer interested (just forming at first to be honest) then he’s like “I have the 2 ma, sorry come and get it”. And I’m like, 2? We ordered 3! So first of all you waste my time and then bring me only 2 shawarmas? He started explaining how they had a lot of customers and blah blah blah but I really couldn’t be bothered. I felt bad for the dude but I had to tell him to go. I told him to take the 2 back to their store and I’ll come there, speak with management, and place my order then pick-up. Also, the website says delivery is free on the island but delivery to anywhere in lekki cost #300.

I previously had an MTN SIM, but I lost it, and assumed I’d get a replacement when I returned to Nigeria for Christmas. Sounds like a simple enough plan. Easy. My family and friends had advised AGAINST getting an MTN SIM and recommended I go with Etisalat instead. Their main reason being the MTN network is so congested and doesn’t function as well. I decided I’d get both and see which I prefer.

I went to the MTN store at the Palms Mall. The queue was rather long. Unwilling to wait, I inquired and was told by the security guard that I had to get a number and wait till I was called. I got a number and stepped out to the Etisalat store. Unfortunately, upon my return, my number had been called and I was told I needed a new number. By the time I was done yellingspeaking with him he decided to let me go after 2 other customers who had been there for a while. Finally, it came to my turn and I dealt with a customer rep called Bukky. She wasn’t the friendliest of all and she played with her Blackberry (BB) while attending to me (I think she was chatting with her friends). She also couldn’t articulate how the hotspot service worked when I asked the difference between the 1k5 and 3k BB plans. Anyway, she said she was done with my registration** and that my SIM should be active within 2 hours. The SIM and registration cost #150. I also wanted to buy credit so I could activate the BB plan but they were wasting too much time so I left. I bought 2k credit on my way home.

24 hours later I still couldn’t use my phone because the SIM was not registered. In my attempt to resolve the issue, I looked through the SIM packs they had given me and realized I got a “dynamic SIM”. At this point, I was confused and wondered if I had registered the wrong SIM. Some form of direction from the MTN rep would have been helpful! Begrudgingly, I went back to the store and had to wait for 15mins before someone else attended to me. She was nicer and recommended I re-register my SIM, which we did. She promised it’d work this time. I also asked about the dynamic SIM and apparently, it’s supposed to be a thing where if you give someone you’d talk to a lot the other SIM, the call rates are waaay cheaper. I would have been more excited about this, had Bukky told me in the first place instead of chatting. It would have saved me unnecessary stress.

6 hours later, my SIM was registered and I could finally load my credit. Loaded the credit and sent the code to activate BBM. Got a message saying it was successful. The End?
I wish!! I STILL couldn’t use the service. I called the MTN customer service number - 180 (which is free by the way) on 6 different occasions and spoke with 6 different courteous reps before the issue was resolved. They all walked me through different troubleshooting steps, which led me to believe that they didn’t receive the same training. Eventually, my issue was resolved after 3 days! 3 days to get a SIM card up and running. #onlyinNigeria

I’ve been to Crumbles ‘n’ Cream a couple of times for their ice cream. It’s a pretty small chill place and the ice cream isn’t bad at all with each scoop costing #400. The last 2 times I visited they had taken the ice cream tubs to the back freezer and forgot to bring them back in after power was restored.  The ice cream came out melted.

A few days back, I was craving some baked goods and decided to try out Crumbles. I ordered the Red Velvet Muffin (cost #350) and it was awful! It was as hard as a stone. My friend got the Blueberry Muffin (cost #350) and it was pretty bad too. It tasted nothing like a muffin and was just very disappointing. We had to ask them to warm up the muffins to be a little palatable. This made the muffins edible but couldn’t mask the fact that they were just poorly made. Refusing to believe that Crumbles ‘n’ Cream couldn’t deliver on tasty treats, I decided to try their double chocolate chip cookie which cost #450 - and it was the worst!!! It tasted like a mixture of sand, flour and sugar that wasn’t baked long enough. I ended up spending wasting a total of #1150 and trashing all the stuff we bought. So much for baked goodies. I was so very disappointed.

Crumbles ‘n’ Cream also offers delivery services.

NYSC, Lagos Camp

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a programme organised by the Federal Republic of Nigeria to promote unity among the various ethnic groups in the country. The programme was designed in a way where young graduates would leave their homes or communities to redeploy to other communities in Nigeria with the sole purpose of learning the values, culture or norms of their host community. But this primary purpose of NYSC has been marred by many mishaps including recent killings of youth corp members in some areas of the country, especially the North.

Review provided by Tayo A.

The very first phase of the programme is the Orientation Camp which lasts for 3 weeks. I was posted to the Lagos Camp located at Iyana Ipaja. The programme was really fun, but it could be annoying sometimes. I personally liked it. We were approximately 4000 members in Lagos camp, and we were divided into 10 groups. Each group was called a platoon.

Front view of hostel
Inner view of hostel
Camp was all about competition among the various platoons; football, volleyball, cooking, Mr Macho, Miss NYSC, athletics, etc (my platoon won nothing!). There were also karate classes (for only people who were interested) and lectures on different topics including anti-corruption, HIV, sex, career development, etc. At night, there were a bunch of fun activities to partake in at the maami market (hanging-out, drinking, dancing, eating, and playing games). The officials, who were mostly men from ranks of the Nigerian Army, Police, Man-O-War, and SSS, were quite gentle on us compared to the way corps in other camps were treated.

Variety Night (sponsored by beat fm)
Cultural Night

Volleyball
Mammi Market

In camp we were fed 3 times daily. Each corp had a meal ticket to use anytime to collect food in the kitchen. We had an assortment of meals including rice, yam, porridge, beans, bread, etc. I heard the food was nice, but I never went to that kitchen. The accommodation was really 'wonderful' - I remember having close to 35 roommates. The rooms were stuffy and always dirty, but I had funny and wonderful roomies. The bathrooms/toilet? Nothing to write home about (as my high school instructors would say...)

Hostel room (i had over 35 roomies!)

On the last day of the Orientation Programme, each corp was assigned to a place of primary assignment (that is where you will be working for your one year in service). You will be expected to go through various registration processes and when that is done, you are good to go! You'll be assigned to work in a government institution (schools, hospitals, local government, etc) - no private firms. The institution then accepts or rejects you. If you are accepted, you'll resume work... if rejected, you'll look for somewhere else. I was originally posted to a Primary School, but I couldn't work with kids so I went to a local government. Also as a corps member you need to join a community development group, such as social group, dance and drama group, health group etc. Each of the groups will hold meetings at least once in a week. Also the allowance each corps member gets from the federal government currently stands at #19800 (~ 125 USD) per month.

**Tip: Your one year of NYSC can be best spent in 2 ways - either you work somewhere you have a chance of being retained after service or work in a place where you can develop yourself/career. Working with the local govt. isn't as strenuous hence there's time to do other things e.g. get a professional qualification, run a side business, etc.

Parade assembly
Pass-out Parade
Overall, the NYSC camp was fun and useful for me because I met a lot of people (crazy, stupid, holy, party, drunk, beautiful, ugly, different tribes etc). It was well worth it. Everyone should experience it and the programme should not be scraped.

Their description:The Washroom and Cafe is a family-friendly launderette where all your washing , drying and ironing can be achieved while you eat from our well put together baguette's and side orders. We offer added value services such as ironing, dry cleaning and service washes, for busy professionals, students, and senior citizens.

I found out about The Washroom/Café when a friend invited me to the opening in mid-2012. If you live in Lekki, like I do, you should know that the water’s brown. Everyone living in Lekki has to treat their water or else it could be hazardous to your health and clothes, especially whites. I’ve never gotten in the habit of dry-cleaning clothes, or having a laundry person come to pick up my clothes. Washing by hands is also not an option when you have a lot of clothes like me.

The Washroom/Cafe is a convenient solution for those who want to get their laundry done quickly.

The Washroom Facilities
The advantages are:
1. It doesn’t take more than an hour and a half.
2. You can have a bite to eat or watch TV while waiting.
3. You can keep an eye on your clothes and not have to worry about whether a laundry person will damage your clothes.
4. There’s a loyalty program. With your loyalty card, every 5th wash cycle is FREE!
5. Huge washers and dryers mean you can do your laundry in 2-3 loads.
6. They can do bulk orders – I overheard a client that regularly sends laundry loads.

Cafe sitting...
Price: It costs N1200 per wash load, and N600 per 20 minutes of drying. The dryers are big, so you can dry 2 small loads at a time with only one cycle.

Overall Value: I’ve found the café items a tad pricey, but not different from similar café offerings around Lagos. I like that I can do a large laundry bag of clothes at a go, not worry about dirty water and have a peaceful atmosphere to relax and eat if I choose to. Only issue is I wish they would offer free wifi.

My friend was celebrating her 18th birthday on the 31st of December and her mother graciously gave her 10k to get a dress. As normal, we were about to go to a store around to get something for her to wear, when her mother suggested we shop online. Our mentality: online shopping is for RICH people. Anyway, we looked up shopping sites online and found out about JUMIA... " Nigeria's number one online store". They informed us that we had to pay 500 naira for delivery, which is okay. It beats telling us free delivery and asking us to pay later.

She ordered the gown a week before her birthday. They assured her that she would get the dress by 10am on her birthday. Birthday Morning: she decided to just wear her everyday jeans and top, waiting for the dress.

10am. No dress
2pm. No dress
4pm. No dress
6pm. She gave up.

Since it's online shopping, we didn't know who to complain to, but we called the customer service number and they said there was nothing they could do. Luckily for her, she selected the "pay on delivery" option. She got the gown 5 days later. No apology, nothing. Just a blank stare from the delivery man and "where is the money ?"

Oh well, the dress is beautiful. That's all that matters. :D

Bye-bye 01 Shawarma and hello Titto’s! I’m very glad I came across this little gem located in the parking lot of Ebeano (right next to the entrance of the supermarket). Apparently, they’ve been operating for 6 months now but I never noticed them.

I was returning from a long days journey with my family when I suggested we get Shawarma for dinner. I’d tried to call 01 on numerous occasions upon entering Lekki 1, but no one answered the phone (read more on that here). My mum then suggested we try “Ebeano’s Shawarma”. I was in disbelief that there was a Shawarma joint right next to Ebeano!

We arrived at Ebeano around 8:55pm and I placed an order for 5 large shawarmas - the large cost #1000 each (small and medium available at 800 and 900 respectively). It took about 25 minutes for all the Shawarma’s to be ready, however I was gisting with the guys who were preparing the meal and they were super-friendly. Although they couldn’t answer most of my questions (e.g. the name of the spot, delivery prices, etc.), they were quick to direct me to the Manager who I think is super-adorable! I mentioned something about how long it was taking for the food to be ready and she calmly explained that they usually close at 9pm but they really wanted to complete my order and didn’t want to turn me away. Right there and then, part of me knew that I was never going back to 01! But once I tasted Titto’s shawarma I knew for sure I’d NEVER EVER EVER get shawarma from 01 again.

Titto’s shawarma really hit the spot for me. In addition, the staff was very friendly and polite. The little area also offers popcorn (which I’ll try very soon) and ice-cream. They are looking to start serving pizza as well but that’s not being offered at the moment. Titto’s will also start delivery services sometime this year… and I can’t wait. Hopefully their management will keep up the good service standards.

I found Konga while going through a friends blog and she went on and on about how awesome the company is - competitive prices, on-time delivery, etc. At first I was like "yeah right", but due to my 9-5er life, I decided to try it out and I was A-M-A-Z-E-D at the variety of products being offered. They even had a beauty corner, soooo COOL!!!

I hadn't bought a gift, so I quickly placed an order and had two delivery slot options: 12pm-3pm and 3pm-6pm. I selected the former, and decided to pay on delivery. I got a call and a mail 10mins later from Konga to confirm my purchase. At exactly 1:30pm, my order was right in-front of me. No story, no excuse. Impossible right? NOT!!!

Then, I found out I could even pay with my ATM card. Like seriously, Naija is improving oh! I was so overwhelmed with joy, I quickly opened a Konga account and did thorough browsing of everything they had. I ordered my skincare products, lip glosses, powder etc. There's a 7 day return policy(on most items) and free installation too. Also, the prices are about the same with Jumia.

At the moment, Konga ships to most parts of Nigeria. Hopefully they'll continue to expand as last year they only operated in Lagos.

Like Konga reps say, they are obsessed with great customer service and our happiness is their prime objective. They've definitely made me a happy bunny!

Who else out there is a konga addict like me?

I got a massage deal (watch this space, review coming soon) for #3500 and I must say the massage was G-O-O-D. Cheap + good value for money... very rare in Naija right? I know! Deals can be bought using various options including bank deposits/transfers (UBA, GTBank, Access or Zenith), Interswitch, Mastercard or Mobile Payments. You'll then receive your coupon by email/SMS and redeem at your merchants location. Simple. Plus their deals usually have a fine print that lists out terms and conditions of the deal.

Dealdey is also an avenue for small scale businesses to make their organisation known around Nigeria. I think everyone should try DealDey ... I doubt you'll regret the savings.

There aren't too many options to explore when searching for accommodation in Lekki. Thus, the decision for my family and I to stay at Brus View Suites wasn't too difficult. As far as hotel sizes go, Brus view is a small one. It does have an outdoor swimming pool, indoor gym, small bar, restaurant and a well air conditioned lobby with desktop computers- pretty standard.

At N18000 a night for the "deluxe room" you pay for more than you get, but it's one of the cheaper hotels in Lekki. The rooms in the hotel are neat and contain the standard stuff - Fridge, AC, flat screen etc. The towels are properly washed and look clean while the complementary stuff in the bathrooms are usually complete/replenished daily.

Much to my displeasure, the rooms do not cool when you are away (as all appliances automatically go off once you leave the room). The hotel also has Wifi connectivity, but the password is incredibly hard to obtain from the staff. Leading me to my next point. Customer service is dire. They take forever to attend to an issue and it's particularly annoying when you consider the small size of the hotel. For example, one of the rooms we checked into didn't have water running. We called the front desk to attend to the issue and they told us they will send someone up. We had to call them several times in the next 2 hours before they finally sent a plumber. It turned out to be a quick fix.

The Hotel staff are very friendly and polite, they just have horrible customer service (as with a lot of places in Nigeria). In all Brus View is a decent option if you are looking for quick short lodging in the Lekki area - prices are competitive and hospitality is decent. However, their service leaves much to be desired.

NYSC, Delta Camp

So, you decided to make money in Nigeria after graduating from University working for someone or yourself, but you discovered you must do your Youth Service. Registration for the programme in Abuja is incredibly hectic - as numerous experiences will inform you - but the fatigue you experience there is pretty much the same across the board for everyone, even those who bribe their way through the process. What varies is the orientation camp experience.

Posting-I was posted to Delta State. The camp is in a village called Isselle – Uku, about 20 minutes from Asaba, the capital. The moment you cross the gate, that is it - you cannot leave until the end of the 3 week orientation unless you’re extremely sick or near death. In my case the Camp Commandant i.e. the big shot soldier guy who is not to be messed with, sent all the pregnant women and nursing mothers home to re-register when they could be away from their children for the whole 3 weeks.

Registration at camp - Annoyingly enough there is another registration process in camp, and because we were about 2400 young men and women in my camp, average registration completion took 3 days. Mine took a week because I got my Call – Up letter but didn’t read the back until I had entered Delta, meaning I had to ask my family to send my University degree and Student ID by Delta Line courier service. In the interim, I had to purchase extremely undersized shoes, as every single person was required to wear white t – shirts, shorts and shoes everyday and the small market within camp didn’t have my shoe size. It was a pitiful and painful week.

Platoons & Soldiers - Each participant is assigned to a platoon led by soldiers. All 12 soldiers sent to supervise us were Hausa except one or two who were non-Hausa women. The soldiers were incredibly strict by day while supervising us, but lax by night when they were not in uniform. The one or two people that messed with them ran with buckets of water on their head shouting “I be mumu!!”…I certainly wasn’t messing with anyone. The Camp Commandant had various rules also, one of which was “don’t be caught using your phone on the parade/assembly ground”… some intelligent idiot defied him and the Captain simply collected the phone and threw it away…and yes, it was a blackberry.

Lectures- We had mandatory lectures from 9am to 2pm on entrepreneurial skills. Different small business owners would come to camp offering to teach us about bead making, baking, construction work, IT servicing, make up and how to get jobs with few companies. Two problems: attending these lectures were torturously boring – at least for me – because there were no breaks and often times you had to stand the whole time; secondly it is rare to find someone who spends years in the University to come out and learn bead making, or collecting government loan to start a farm as they were encouraging during these lectures. Those who were caught leaving the multi-purpose hall did 200 push ups, 150 frog jumps and whatever else the soldiers considered fun under the sun.

Food - We were fed three times a day from a kitchen run by incredibly hard working women who were assisted by Youth Corpers for each meal. There was a lot of garri and soup, porridge beans, and jollof rice. On rare occasions, someone would donate a cow and we’d eat meat. Fish caused fights because the pieces were so small and we were entitled to one each so naturally people duped others by colluding with their friends serving food and stashing more than their share. However, some people patronized surrounding mama puts that served meals costing between 200 - 400 naira. Meals included indomie, jollof rice, salad, garri and soup, add-on proteins, etc. There were over 12 mama puts around this camp market.

Water - In the mornings, tankers brought water to the camp, and water was pumped at night. However, water would finish in less than 2 hours because people had to wash and shower. As for drinking water you either bought pure water or bottled water; there was no free drinking water whatsoever. If you went the pure water route you most certainly got typhoid after camp because there was a different company bringing their "pure" water every 4 days. As for the toilets,  all pit latrines (cleaned daily), but the majority of Corpers went to toilet around the hostels, so the only way you slept at night was simply out of fatigue from the day because the stench around the hostels could destroy your nostrils - especially the girls hostel! Oh my goodness! It was so bad the Camp Commandant complained about it.

Summary- If there’s anything NYSC achieves it is multi – ethnic cohesion. The population of the camp was overwhelmingly dominated by Igbo youth, followed by Yoruba youth, other South – South youth, and a handful of Hausas and Northerners. I don’t know the reason for such an imbalanced demographic but we all got along stunningly well.  Group activities like marching, cooking for the camp, and doing sanitation motivated unity of purpose among all of us. There was a lot of inter-dating amongst tribes too...

All in all, camp encouraged us to treat each other with equality, just that it went on for too long: 3 weeks is too much!! And if you think that’s the end the real suffering begins right after camp when you have to get posted to one of four government sectors: health, infrastructure, energy, or education.

I have passed by Cata Spa in Yellow Tulip Courtyard apartments a few times in the past but never bothered to go in. My twinne went there first - waxed her legs, and shared pics via BBM (thanks RIM). After viewing her pictures I made a halfhearted note to visit some day.

Fast forward a couple weeks later and I was in a ghastly motor accident on my way to work. I was in serious pains so my twinnes mum offered me a spa session at Cata Spa. My twinne accompanied me and it was heavenly, serene and very clean. The space smelt lovely and the swimming pool was virtually calling my name.

The Thai beauty therapist was an extremely nice lady. She seemed to have a lot of experience and knew exactly what she was doing. However, I don't think she understood the English I spoke. I was telling her about the accident and she was smiling. I just kept quiet after a while. She ended up prescribing a pain relieve massage and it was superb! All the oils she used were made with natural products and were quite soothing. There was also calm and classic music playing in the background - it was so magical. My massage lasted for 30 minutes and it was well worth it.

After the massage I had a bath and went back to the spa lounge. We were offered some amazing tea - something fruity with honey. Till date I'm still searching for the tea! I took a tour of the entire place; the gym was well equipped, the restaurant and the seat out looked good. The environment is really inviting.

If you stay on the mainland - or not - you should check this place out. Facials cost between 5k-6k and massages 5k-10k. They also offer a "couples massage" *wink*. I highly recommend this spa and will be going back soon.
